A myth of  Argentina

CARLOS GARDEL

  gardel.jpg (27811 bytes)

He was the tango's greatest folk hero. To many millions of Latin Americans he is one of the authentic superstars of the 20th century. Born poor and illegitimate -in Toulouse, France, on December 11,1890- he came to Buenos Aires with his mother at the age of two, and was to become the most famous tango singer of all time. For   porteños (i) , he represents the ideal man, personifying the rise of the tango itself from its roots in the arrabal (ii) to the heights of fashionable society.
Blessed with a beautiful baritone voice, Gardel was already a famous singer in Argentina before he turned his attention to tango song, but it was he who established the new form in the public taste.
Gardel and his lyricist Alfredo Le Pera were killed in a plane crash June 24, 1935 in Medellin (Colombia) in  the midst of his Caribbean tour.

i. Buenos Aires was (and is) a port, it's  inhabitants almost as if  to underline the point are called  porteños.
ii. The outermost areas of Buenos Aires, the so-called arrabales with their muddy streets, shacks and workshops, presented the most vivid contrast to the magnificent city Centre.
